I'm glad I stumbled on this forum...I was diagnosed with Rapid Cycling Bipolar Disorder yesterday. I have all kinds of information but its really hard to take it all in right now. I still can't say the words, I'm Bipolar, and believe them. Anyway I'm not going to ramble on. I'm glad I found this forum, and hello *waves* to all my future friends.

It's rough when you're first diagnosed... I remember it well. I was diagnosed in October 2007. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed though, things usually get better once your diagnosed and you receive the proper treatment. I would suggest educating yourself as much as possible about the disorder because bipolar disorder is a management disorder and management usually includes medication, therapy, eating healthy, proper sleep patterns and learning what things in your life act as triggers.
I built the accompanying website because I had a difficult time finding one place that gave me a lot of information about the disorder and as I collected it I thought it would be a good idea to share it with other people in the same predicament. There are a lot of articles, videos, radio shows, etc. that you can sift through to help educated yourself. You'll be amazed how empowering it can be to educated about this disorder. It truly gives you the upper hand.

Thank-you very much, you are very supportive. It's good to have sites like this. My family needs just as much education because I find it helps a bit when they tell me when I'm manic, it's hard for me to tell myself because my thoughts race so much...lol. One thing the specialists told me to do is write down everything that stresses me out because the could be triggers, or if thats hard I can keep sort of like a journal and write down what happened before an episode (I'll be on meds sometime this week so...) and see if I can find a trigger in that. When I get a therapist and/or psychologist and stuff they said that I could work on that with them. I know though, that stress is a BIG trigger, depending on what kind. If it's a stress that makes me mad it ends up triggering me into Mania, and if it's a stressor that makes me sad, then I get depressed. Sometimes it really confuses me....lol.

Hi Nikki, nice to meet you!!
You've certainly come to the right place here...there's lots of info all in one place, we're very lucky to have our Admin keeping up with things.
It took me a long time to get here and I'm happy I did.
I know what you mean about things getting confusing...try not to be judgemental of yourself, we are often our own worst enemies for that!!
Take care

This definitely is the most supportive and informative site I've found. (And Canadian! Yay!) It has really been a great help for me to come here and read that other people are going through similar situations as me. I feel less like a victim and more empowered to improve myself.

Hi Nikki,
I just joined this forum too, and I recently moved away from Nova Scotia (I was living in Halifax).
I suspect belonging to an online forum like this will be useful. I also found it great to join a bipolar support group, something I did when I moved out west. It "normalizes" the disorder and makes you realize you're not alone.
I look forward to sharing stories and information here! I should post my own new member intro as well.

Welcome to the forum James!
Can you give me some details about the support group? How many people, topics you discuss, how it has benefited you personally, etc., etc. I'd be interested to hear about your experiences. I've been thinking about looking into a group where I live.![]()

Thanks! I don't want to derail Nikki's thread, but perhaps this could be useful information for her as well.
The group I was in had about 8 members + spouses or family members. We shared stories, discussed experiences, biases that we've found or heard regarding bipolar disorder, etc.
We also practised breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and used a log to track mood changes and medication. A pharmacist came in to speak to us about meds, and a great deal of time was used to analyze our own thought processes and encourage positive self-talk, since someone who is bipolar tends to have two negative thoughts for every single positive thought.
I have become close friends with one guy from the group, and we hang out often. As he said, it doesn't matter if we're discussing mental health issues or not, it's just great to hang out with someone who is the same and understands what it's like to be bipolar.

It's great that you were able to find such a group in your area. I remember going through outpatient therapy/groups and the people weren't like that. It would be cool to find a group of people like those in this forum. We should plan a get-together sometime - everyone in the forums. That'd be cool. lol
